This year will be the second year in a row in which warming climate will decimate olive crops in the Mediterranean region.  (I wish this was the only fallout)

Prices of the low grade olive oil (Lampante * or Virgin) have already more than doubled according to the Financial times.

In order to avoid falling for fairy tales; low grade olive oil is the backbone of the business of global multinationals that fill the shelves of supermarkets with Olive Oil.

They used to buy zillions of litres of low grade Olive oil at 3 bucks, refine it**, blend it with a % of better Olive oil, bottle it and sell it to supermarkets at a “deserved” markup.

Retailers then sold it on to consumers at a couple of bucks more, and that is how you had “Extra Virgin (BITCH) Olive oil” on the shelves at anything between 7 to 10 euros per litre.

Now this game is broken, supply demand dynamics bust the model.

Already last year you could see a dramatic reduction of variety in offerings at supermarkets globally, and a price spike. Let alone the quality of what was in the bottles.

This year will be more of the same; refineries, (that is what mass olive oil suppliers are) will have no margin, prices will have to rise significantly for them to sign contracts with large retailers.

Expect record levels of seed oil and other low grade vegetable oils to be blended in olive oil produced for mass retailers.

You will read about these scams in two years’ time, as frauds work their way through the regulatory and legal systems, and if you are good at sourcing your news.

The impact of extreme weather, pest and disease outbreaks, as well as supply chain disruptions and increased production costs, are all factors that are really difficult to face for all olive growers and millers, particularly those that manage olive plantations that are centuries old, and conceived for a world that no longer is.

If you want Olive Oil next fall, you better find your source directly from producers across the planet,  that are not traders, scruple less middleman, speculators, mass retailers or multinationals, because their useless business model is broken, crippled like everything else by groupthink: Anything for a quick buck.

So be ready for less quality, higher prices, and more fraud in what already is the most adulterated vegetable oil market in the world.

*”Lampante” is a technical term used to describe a type of olive oil that is not suitable for human consumption in its current state.

** The Olive Oil refining process involves several steps, including:

  • Degumming: This step removes water-soluble impurities and gums from the oil.
  • Neutralization: The oil is treated with an alkaline substance to neutralize its acidity and remove free fatty acids.
  • Bleaching: Bleaching clay is used to absorb and remove pigments, off-flavours, and other impurities.
  •  Deodorization: Steam is passed through the oil to remove any remaining odours and flavours.
